While editing a page, a small Summary field under the main edit-box which looks like this is displayed:
It's good practice to fill in the Edit Summary field, or add to it in the case of section editing, since it helps everyone understand what was changed as one is for example looking at the history page. We therefore recommend that one sets the user (under Editing) to "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary". #
If you are applying substitution, it is especially useful to provide the wikitext line that contains the subst: in the edit summary since the substitution does not otherwise show up in the page history.
